Just recently, during a visit to my favorite ski resort, I grabbed some self-serve food options, already a tad on the pricey side, as expected. However, as I swiped my credit card, it prompted me to add a tip. Curious, I asked the clerk who would benefit from this additional amount. To my surprise, she mentioned it would be split among the staff. But then I couldn’t help but wonder, shouldn’t the exorbitant prices already cover fair compensation for these hardworking employees?

Now, it appears that we in the lodging industry are getting more involved in pushing the tipping practice.

IHG Hotels & Resorts recently announced the integration of various digital tipping providers into their payment systems. This move aims to enhance guest satisfaction and employee recognition, a response to the evolving preferences of today’s consumers. Brian McGuinness, IHG’s SVP of global guest experience, highlighted the company’s commitment to adapting to changing consumer behaviors, emphasizing the importance of providing a seamless and secure digital tipping platform.

This statement echoes the sentiment of many industry experts who view tipping as a crucial competitive tool, particularly in a labor market marked by stiff competition for talent.

As someone entrenched in the hospitality industry, I’ve witnessed firsthand the dedication of housekeepers to ensuring guests’ rooms are immaculate. Hence, I’ve always made it a point to leave a tip as a token of appreciation. These individuals often don’t earn hefty salaries despite their significant impact on guests’ experiences. It’s heartening to see more guests acknowledging their efforts by tipping. However, with the advent of digital tipping programs introduced by several hotel chains, I can’t help but ponder— are we following the cruise industry, adding tips to your tap without your consent?

Witnessing the evolution of tipping practices and their implications for both guests and service providers is fascinating. What are your thoughts on the increasing prevalence of digital tipping solutions in the hospitality industry?
